People familiar with the matter told News18 that the in-house panel will stay in Delhi for three days and the Supreme Court will share information on their designated secretariat soon after which formal proceedings in the matter will begin.
They said the panel would seek a formal explanation from Justice Varma, question fire department officials, quiz his residential and official staffers and conduct a forensic analysis of his call records. They are also likely to rope in Delhi High Court Chief Justice and senior police officials.
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna last Saturday formed a three-member committee to look into allegations against the Delhi High Court judge. The committee members include Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court judge Justice Anu Sivaraman, the Supreme Court said.
Later, on Monday, the Supreme Court Collegium repatriated Varma back to Allahabad High Court. “The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad," the Supreme Court said in a statement.
Justice Varma is currently embroiled in controversy over the alleged recovery of cash at his residence during a fire-fighting operation earlier this month.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court (HC) registry withdrew judicial work assigned to Justice Yashwant Varma and in its new roster assigned his work to Justice Subramanium Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar.
Justice Varma has dismissed the allegations, claiming he was being “indicted and defamed in the press".
The inquiry report into the incident led by Delhi HC chief justice (CJ) Devendra Kumar Upadhyay said that fire broke out on March 14 in a storeroom of the bungalow where Justice Varma was residing and that the storeroom was accessible only to the residents of the bungalow.
